The windmill was erected in 1770 and continued working milling flour until 1930.
After many years of dereliction the mill is now restored to working order and produces stoneground flour in the traditional way by both electricity and when the weather permits, wind power.
The two old millstones are leaning against the rear of the windmill. Unlike many millstones this type of millstone is made of many separate pieces fitted together rather than being a single piece of stone.
Although more difficult to manufacture this design allows parts of the stone to be replaced when damaged rather than having to make a totally new stone.
As time has gone on a housing estate grew up around the windmill which is on a hill and parking is limited nearby. However there is a footpath that leads up to the windmill from Acomb road, where there is on-road parking.
