El puente Nuevo es el monumento más emblemático de la ciudad malagueña de Ronda. Construido entre 1751 y 1793, hasta 1839 fue el puente más alto del mundo con una altura de 98 metros. Une las zonas histórica y moderna de la ciudad salvando el tajo de Ronda, una garganta excavada por el río Guadalevín.
En 1735 se construyó el primer puente, derrumbándose seis años más tarde y matando a 50 personas. Al parecer la falta de apoyos, el mal cerramiento del arco y la mala ejecución de la obra hicieron que el puente se derrumbara.
No fue hasta 1751 cuando se decidió emprender la construcción de un nuevo puente.? Para sufragarlo hubo que recoger 15.000 reales de la Real Maestranza e imponer un impuesto en la Feria de Mayo. En su realización intervinieron diversos maestros, aunque el más destacado fue José Martín de Aldehuela,? quien finalizó la obra. Finalmente fue inaugurado en mayo de 1793.
De sillería de piedra, el puente presenta un arco central de medio punto apoyado en otro más pequeño por el que transcurre el río. En la parte superior, se encuentran las dependencias del puente que, en otros tiempos, fueron utilizadas como prisión, a cuyos lados se abren otros dos arcos, también de medio punto, que sostienen la estructura que soporta la calle. Más tarde funcionó como mesón y actualmente, es un centro de interpretación del entorno y la historia de la ciudad.?
El puente Nuevo fue el puente con el vano más alto del mundo desde su construcción hasta 1839, cuando fue superado por el puente de la Caille, en Francia.
The New Bridge is the most emblematic monument of the Malaga city of Ronda. Built between 1751 and 1793, until 1839 it was the highest bridge in the world with a height of 98 meters. The first bridge was built in 1735, collapsing six years later, killing 50 people. Apparently the lack of supports, the poor closure of the arch and the poor execution of the work caused the bridge to collapse.
It was not until 1751 when the construction of a new bridge began. To pay for it, 15,000 reales had to be collected from the Real Maestranza and a tax was imposed at the May Fair. Made of stone masonry, the bridge has a central round arch supported by a smaller one through which the river flows. In the upper part, there are the rooms of the bridge that, in other times, were used as a prison, on whose sides there are two other arches, also semicircular, that support the structure that supports the street. Later it appeared as an inn and is currently an interpretation center for the environment and the history of the city.
The New Bridge was the bridge with the highest span in the world from its construction until 1839, when it was surpassed by the Pont de la Caille in France.
