This fine "Welcome to Waurika" sign is constructed of light red and pink brick, with large metal letters. Silhouette art sculptures, of a cowboy on horseback roping a steer and a cowgirl on her galloping steed about to turn around a barrel are on either side.

Waurika (population 2000 or so) is the county seat of Jefferson County. The name of the town might mean "worm digger" or it might mean "pure water" - it depends on who you ask. Waurika claims to be the Parakeet Capitol of the World, for no know reason. Waurika was settled after the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache Reservation was opened to non-Indians on August 6, 1901. The first white settler was James McGraw, who homesteaded on the present town site after moving from Indiana. In 1902 the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad named the town as a "flag station," meaning if you wanted the train to stop you had to flag it down. The economy is based primarily on cattle, agriculture, and oil.
