"St. Francis Wood is a residence park on the western face of Mount Davidson in San Francisco, on land that gradually slopes down from east to west. Landscape architects, the Olmsted Brothers, created a plan that responds to this topography. The arrangement of the streets and blocks transitions from a grid in the more gently sloped western portion of the development to a curvilinear arrangement in response to hilly terrain and steeper slopes in the northeastern portion. Starting at the intersection of Junipero Serra and Monterey Boulevards, progressing clockwise, St. Francis Wood is bounded by Junipero Serra Boulevard, Portola Drive, San Pablo Avenue, Yerba Buena Avenue, Santa Paula Avenue, San Jacinto Way, San Andreas Way, and Monterey Boulevard. The main entrance to the residential tract, along St. Francis Boulevard, at the intersection of Sloat Boulevard, Junipero Serra Boulevard, and Portola Drive, begins and rises gently for several blocks; then the grade increases steeply moving eastward. Contributing resources include five hundred one buildings, twenty-four sites, and four structures. Sixty-two noncontributing resources—sixty buildings and two sites—date from outside the period of significance, do not add to the historic associations for which this the property is significant, or have lost integrity. The district retains all aspects of integrity." (visit link)
