Do you know what to do if you encounter a bear, a moose, or or a wolf? If not this is your last chance to pick up possibly life-saving information before you head out on the Savage River Loop Trail in Denali National Park.

The sign reads as follows:

"ARE YOU PREPARED?

What should you do in a wildlife encounter?

MOOSE

1. STAY AWAY

Stay at least two bus lengths (25 yards) away from moose. Their lives are already difficult; do not add to their stress.

2. RUN AWAY

If a moose charges you, it is because you are too close. Moose are not predatory, but they may trample a perceived threat. Run away as fast as you can.

WOLVES

1. STAY AWAY
Stay at least two bus lengths (25 yards) away from wolves.

2. GET TOUGH

If a wolf approaches you, shout aggressively and throw rocks to get it to leave. Do not run from a wolf.

BEARS

Bears are generally in their dens from late October to early April, but occasionally emerge in mid-winter. If you encounter a bear, follow these rules, and then report your encounter to a park ranger.

1. STAY AWAY

Do not approach wildlife. Stay 300 yards (275m) or three American football fields away from bears. If you can easily identify a bear, you are too close. A bear in winter can be very dangerous.

2. READ THE BEAR’S BEHAVIOR

If a bear approaches you and acts “sneaky,” approaching indirectly and slowly, it is likely displaying curious behavior.

When encountering a curious bear, stand your ground -- don’t back away. Yell at the bear and try to look large and intimidating. Be aggressive with your voice and movements. The idea is to scare it away. Use bear spray if he gets in range. If a curious bear attacks, fight back and do not play dead!

If a bear approaches you toward you quickly and looks aggressive, it is likely displaying a defensive behavior.

When encountering a defensive bear, make yourself look large, but non-threatening. Your movements and voice should be slow and soft. The idea is to convince the bear you’re not a threat to it. Given the opportunity, slowly back away from the bear. If a defensive bear attacks, you should play dead and don’t move until you’re sure that the bear has left the area.

RESPECT ALL WILDLIFE

* Never approach her feet any kind of wildlife, no matter how small.

* If an animal seems agitated, move away from it."
