Dubai Marina Mall has announced that it will start charging customers for parking for the first time in its history.

A trial period is currently underway to get customers used to the idea, but no payment is required until the end of this month.

When the plan goes into effect on July 21 , customers will still be able to park for free for the first three hours.

After that, however, drivers will pay Dh20 for every hour they go over the three-hour limit .

Exceptions include free parking on weekends and holidays.

Moviegoers will receive an additional two hours of free parking when they validate their tickets at the theater counter .

On Monday, Emaar Properties, the mall's developer, said the charging system was introduced "to improve the experience for customers and shoppers at the mall."
