The Baptists were the first religious organization to build a church in Russell. The Russell Baptist Church was constructed in 1853 in the Greek Revival style. In 1923 all the Protestant denominations in Russell united as the Community Church in this building to form a non-denominational congregational.
The 2½ story building has a gable roof and is three bays wide with a set of steps leading up to an entrance on the east side. The other two bays have paired windows on both the lower and upper levels.
Rising from the gable roof is a three-tiered. The lower tier is a square tower. The middle tier is a belfry with louvered windows. Above is a hexagonal spire.
The sides are three bays deep. The east side has three sets of four windows that two stories high. The west side has a set of four windows at the lower level and a set of stairs leading up to a doorway at the upper level. The middle bay has four windows that two stories high. A ramp leads to an ground floor entrance at the third bay and above is a set of four windows.
