The Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel is located on Saint Mary Street in the town of Loretto, Pennsylvania. The parish was founded by Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin in 1788. There have been four churches on the site since that time, including the present church that was completed in 1901. The church was paid for by Charles M. Schwab, president of U.S. Steel. The church is built of sandstone in the Romanesque Revival style. It has one prominent tower. In 1996, Pope Saint John Paul II named Saint Michael's a minor basilica.
