This is the first of six locks on the canal leaving from Chichester harbour. It is known as Salterns lock and is still occasionally used to provide access to the sea for the many houseboats moored along the remaining section of the canal that is still in water.

The 12 mile Chichester canal ran from the sea level of Chichester harbour for 12 miles to Ford on the River Arun. It was designed by the well known canal engineer, John Rennie, who died in 1822, the year the canal opened.

It was designed as part of the inland link between London and Chichester/Portsmouth. Sadly the route was never really profitable as the sea route became the cheaper alternative.

This lock leads from the harbour and is the only lock still in use. As the harbour is tidal, the depth varies.

Connected Points:
The Chichester Canal linked Ford on the River Arun to Salterns in Chichester harbour. The River Arun led to the Wey & Arun Canal and then the River Wey and then the River Thames forming "London's Lost Route To The Sea" - an absolutely fascinating if you can find a copy.
