Dit pand aan de Utrechtsestraatweg ken je vast wel. Het staat tegenover het Reypenaer kaaspakhuis en het ziet er al járen verlaten uit. Boven de voordeur zit een grijs beeldhouwwerk, verder is er niet zoveel te zien. Maar het is precies dat grijze beeldhouwwerk waaraan je kunt zien wat hier vroeger heeft gezeten. Namelijk: het oude post- en telegraafkantoor.

Het gebouw werd er in 1939 neergezet, speciaal bedoeld als post- en telegraafkantoor. Kosten? Zo’n veertigduizend gulden. Het pand is een rijksmonument, mede omdat het ontworpen is door die ingenieur Bremer. Maar ook omdat het een herkenbaar post- en telegraafkantoor is. En dat komt niet door Gustav Bremer, maar door een man genaamd Leo Vos. Hij maakte namelijk het beeldhouwwerk boven de deur.

Een reliëf, zo kun je dat werk ook wel noemen. Wat erop te zien is? In het midden staat het wapen van Woerden, dat herken je ongetwijfeld wel. Aan beide zijden van dat wapen staat een telegraafpaal. En inderdaad, er staat ook PTT in letters, Staatsbedrijf der Posterijen, Telegrafie en Telefonie (voor de mensen van na de jaren 90).

Maar kijk vooral eens goed naar de twee figuurtjes aan de linker- en rechterzijde. Links zie je een postbode die pakjes bezorgt en zijn hondje. En rechts een dame met een telefoon in haar hand en een kat. Volgens een document van Historische Vereniging SHHV is de vrouw rechts aan het ‘wenen’, vanwege het slechte nieuws dat zij van de postbode kreeg…

Als je langs het gebouw komt, ga dan vooral het beeldhouwwerk eens van dichtbij bekijken. Tot 1978 deed dit pand dienst als postkantoor. Daarna verhuisde het kantoor naar de Edisonweg, vervolgens naar de Westdam en inmiddels bestaan postkantoren niet meer.

You probably know this building on the Utrechtsestraatweg. It is opposite the Reypenaer cheese warehouse and it has looked abandoned for years. Above the front door is a gray sculpture, otherwise there is not much to see. But it is precisely that gray sculpture that shows what used to be here. Namely: the old post and telegraph office.

The building was erected in 1939, especially as a post and telegraph office. Cost? About forty thousand guilders. The building is a national monument, partly because it was designed by the engineer Bremer. But also because it is a recognizable post and telegraph office. And that is not because of Gustav Bremer, but because of a man named Leo Vos. He made the sculpture above the door.

A relief, that's how you can call that work. What can be seen on it? In the middle is the coat of arms of Woerden, which you will undoubtedly recognize. On both sides of that coat of arms is a telegraph pole. And indeed, it also says PTT in letters, Staatsbedrijf der Posterijen, Telegraaf and Telephony (for the people after the 90s).

But take a good look at the two figures on the left and right. On the left you see a postman who delivers packages and his dog. And on the right a lady with a phone in her hand and a cat. According to a document from the SHHV Historical Association, the woman on the right is 'crying' because of the bad news she received from the postman...

If you pass by the building, be sure to take a closer look at the sculpture. Until 1978, this building served as a post office. The office then moved to Edisonweg, then to Westdam and the post offices no longer exist.
