The racecourse is built on the floodplain of the nearby Georges River.

The main event each year is held on Australia Day. Nearby are stables used by many trainers.

In the 1950s a car racing track was built around the racecourse. It hosted a round of the Tasman Cup where Formula One drivers came to Australia and New Zealand to race against local drivers. This track closed in 1993.
