Medieval Guilds and Crafts Town Trail

In 2010 the Town of Beverley opened a town trail of 39 pieces of art that represent guilds and crafts that operated in Beverley in Medieval Times. Each piece is located in a place in the town most relevant to that particular guild.

The type of art work varies but each one is relevant to where it is positioned. The artworks are not named in situ, so to fully understand what each represents it is necessary to refer to the town trail map, available on line. link

The details for this statue on the trail document state the following.

"Walkers
Walkers were part of the wool
industry. They walked on woolen
cloth to shrink and thicken it
around the ‘Walker Beck’, which
now runs beneath Walkergate.
How many footprints can you find?"

the name of the road also gives a clue to the profession carried out in this area. In Medieval times 'gate' was a word that meant road, so this road would be Walker Road in modern English.

The Petrosomatoglyphs are set in concrete along the left hand side of the road, which rather appropriately has been pedestrianised.

The Town Trail could be walked in a day, but for convenience is split into 4 different walks covering 4 parts of Beverly. This artwork is number 2 and is part of walk 2.
