Sweetheart pin cushions were popular during World War I. They could be made by anyone and sent to a loved one as a reminder to keep thinking of them during the war.
However they were often made by injured soldiers during their recovery. Usually made in in the shape of a heart it is believed that they were produced in kit form.
They were usually made in the shape of a heart and many had the following inscription.
Think of Me When the golden sun is sinking,
And your mind from care set free,
When of others you are thinking,
Will you sometimes Think of Me.
Emma Hargreaves, the artist was asked to paint a mural for the celebrations of the end of World War I and was inspired by the knowledge that a sweetheart pin cushion had been created within her own family.
The mural has a sweetheart pin cushion design, the lines of the poem and the Beverley coat of arms.
Part of the design on the cushion includes references to local armed forces 47 Air Squadron Air Corps who were based on the nearby Beverly Racecourse and the East Yorkshire Regiment.
There are also silhouettes of World War I fighter planes flying in the air. In the bottom right hand corner is a flower shape where the petals are made from silhouettes of army buglers playing the Last Post and underneath that the artist's name.
