It was built in the 18th century on one of 1502, which in turn replaced the old mosque.
Walking through the steep streets of the middle district of Capileira we come across the traditional and well-kept church of the Virgen de la Cabeza. We are received by the image of the Virgin, ceded by the Catholic Monarchs in the s. XV, hostess that lives inside, but not the only element that stands out. It also does a Baroque-style altarpiece, in gilded wood, from the s. XVII. These two main elements are surrounded by details from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, in which the temple has been rebuilt.
The church of the Virgen de la Cabeza has its big days on the last weekend of April and the second of August, on the occasion of the festival in honor of the patron saint. The Virgen de la Cabeza is celebrated in April but it was decided to also celebrate it in August so that the emigrants from the town, who were many, could attend.
The residents of Capileira decorate the Virgin with a crown of fresh flowers and some dress up as “devils” to “scare” people on the street. The festival ends with the 'burial of the fox', a pagan tradition whose origins are not exactly known.
