Saint-Aubin « 0 »
Une construction antique ayant été réutilisée comme premier lieu de culte lors de l'évangélisation de la région n'a pas été découverte lors des explorations archéologiques du site. Mais sa présence est possible. En effet, comme un peu partout dans le centre de la cité, des fragments de tegulae (tuiles romaines) ont été découverts2. De plus le centre du chœur et la croisée du transept n'ont pas été explorés par les fouilles anciennes restées assez superficielles. Les recherches archéologiques récentes n'ont pas exploré l'intérieur du bâtiment.
Saint-Aubin I
Un premier bâtiment est implanté sur le site actuel au VIe siècle, d'après la tradition, sous l'égide du chef breton Waroch3. Cet édifice religieux, probablement modeste, serait à l'origine de l'implantation urbaine actuelle. Les éléments le concernant ne sont connus que par des écrits tardifs et postérieurs, les fouilles du XIXe siècle en ont peut-être révélé des éléments, mais leur imprécision ne permet pas d'autres interprétations.
Saint-Aubin II, la basilique de Salomon
Après la translation des reliques de Saint Aubin d'Angers, un second bâtiment plus grand est construit à la fin du IXe siècle ou au Xe siècle. Cet édifice sera très rapidement entouré d'un cimetière entre le Xe siècle et le XIIe siècle. Un des sarcophages trouvé sous le chœur actuel, au niveau du chevet, au XIXe siècle4 a été déposé dans la Chapelle Basse ou crypte de la Collégiale.
Des éléments architecturaux de ce bâtiment ont été retrouvés dans les collatéraux explorés en tranchées pour vérifier la solidité des fondations avant la construction des voûtes et au niveau du chevet (base de pilier notamment, avec chapiteaux en réemplois), et un mur en fondation est attribué à ce bâtiment sous le mur nord du transept, découvert lors des dernières fouilles archéologiques5.
Saint-Aubin III, la collégiale romane
Les incursions des Normands, aux conséquences importantes dans la région, obligent peut-être la reconstruction des bâtiments en style roman tardif6, ou la démographie de la ville et l'affirmation de sa puissance commerciale peut aussi être à l'origine de cette construction comme manifestation de prestige. Cette phase débutée après le milieu du XIIe siècle se termine par la construction de la façade principale au XIIIe siècle. Il s'agit probablement plus d'une extension avec une construction d'une nef élargie, que d'une reconstruction complète de l'édifice. Le chœur du Xe siècle a probablement été conservé, au moins en partie. Le mur nord du chœur a probablement été reconstruit à la fin de ce cycle de construction. Le cimetière s'étend alors particulièrement au sud du bâtiment, à l'emplacement de l'actuelle place Saint-Aubin, centre de la ville.
Éléments visibles de cette étape : 8 colonnes avec chapiteaux historiés dans la nef (7 des chapiteaux sont romans (XIIe siècle), le 8e a été refait au XIXe siècle à la suite de l'effondrement de la façade, voir infra), ainsi que des sculptures en réemploi XIIIe siècle dans la façade actuelle.
Saint-Aubin IV, la collégiale gothique
Après le sac de Guérande par les troupes de Louis de La Cerda en 1342 dans le cadre de la guerre de succession de Bretagne, la collégiale ruinée est reconstruite à partir de 1380 en style gothique : le transept sud et la « crypte » au XIVe siècle, le transept nord est repris ensuite puis le chœur et le chevet sont reconstruits au XVe siècle. Une nouvelle façade gothique termine le bâtiment, la charpente sur les transepts est posée en 15417. Le cimetière s'étend à partir de cette époque au nord de la collégiale, jusqu'à son déplacement place Sainte-Anne au XIXe siècle, à l'emplacement de l'actuelle place Jean XXIII, libérant ainsi l'actuelle place Saint-Aubin.
Au XVIe siècle : pose des vitraux de saint Aubin et de saint Julien (gauche et droite du chœur), puis XVIIe siècle : pose du grand vitrail du couronnement de la Vierge, au centre du chevet et enfin, le mobilier de l'église : stalles, autels, jubé (enlevé en 1804, et entré au Musée de Cluny à Paris (actuellement Musée national du Moyen Âge, N°inv. 1604) et depuis sa porte centrale est mise en dépôt au Musée de la Porte Saint-Michel), et aménagement de la Sacristie.

St. Aubin "0"
An ancient construction having been reused as the first place of worship during the evangelization of the region was not discovered during the archaeological explorations of the site. But his presence is possible. Indeed, like everywhere in the center of the city, fragments of tegulae (Roman tiles) have been discovered2. Moreover, the center of the choir and the crossing of the transept have not been explored by the old excavations which have remained quite superficial. Recent archaeological research has not explored the interior of the building.
Saint-Aubin I
A first building was established on the current site in the 6th century, according to tradition, under the aegis of the Breton chef Waroch3. This religious building, probably modest, would be at the origin of the current urban settlement. The elements concerning it are only known by late and later writings, the excavations of the 19th century may have revealed elements of it, but their imprecision does not allow other interpretations.
Saint-Aubin II, the basilica of Solomon
After the relics of Saint Aubin d'Angers were transferred, a second, larger building was built at the end of the 9th century or in the 10th century. This building will very quickly be surrounded by a cemetery between the 10th century and the 12th century. One of the sarcophagi found under the current choir, at the level of the apse, in the 19th century4 was placed in the Lower Chapel or crypt of the Collegiate.
Architectural elements of this building were found in the collaterals explored in trenches to check the solidity of the foundations before the construction of the vaults and at the level of the apse (base of the pillar in particular, with reused capitals), and a wall in the foundation is attributed to this building under the north wall of the transept, discovered during the last archaeological excavations5.
Saint-Aubin III, the Romanesque collegiate church
The incursions of the Normans, with significant consequences in the region, perhaps forced the reconstruction of buildings in the late Romanesque style6, or the demography of the city and the assertion of its commercial power could also be at the origin of this construction as manifestation of prestige. This phase, which began after the middle of the 12th century, ends with the construction of the main facade in the 13th century. It is probably more of an extension with a construction of an enlarged nave, than a complete reconstruction of the building. The 10th century chancel has probably been preserved, at least in part. The north wall of the choir was probably rebuilt at the end of this building cycle. The cemetery then extends particularly to the south of the building, on the site of the current Place Saint-Aubin, the center of the city.
Visible elements of this stage: 8 columns with historiated capitals in the nave (7 of the capitals are Romanesque (12th century), the 8th was redone in the 19th century following the collapse of the facade, see below), as well as 13th century reused sculptures in the current facade.
Saint-Aubin IV, the Gothic collegiate church
After the sack of Guérande by the troops of Louis de La Cerda in 1342 as part of the war of succession of Brittany, the ruined collegiate church was rebuilt from 1380 in Gothic style: the south transept and the "crypt" in the 14th century , the north transept was then taken over and then the choir and the apse were rebuilt in the 15th century. A new Gothic facade completes the building, the framework on the transepts is laid in 15417. The cemetery extends from this time to the north of the collegiate church, until its displacement to Place Sainte-Anne in the 19th century, to the location of the current Place Jean XXIII, thus freeing up the current Place Saint-Aubin.
In the 16th century: installation of stained glass windows of Saint Aubin and Saint Julien (left and right of the choir), then 17th century: installation of the large stained glass window of the coronation of the Virgin, in the center of the apse and finally, the furniture of the church: stalls, altars, rood screen (removed in 1804, and entered in the Cluny Museum in Paris (currently National Museum of the Middle Ages, N° inv. 1604) and since its central door is deposited in the Musée de la Porte Saint-Michel) , and layout of the Sacristy.
