Today, this building is home to the Seoul Metropolitan Library. In 2003, the Cultural Heritage Administration designated this building as National Registered Cultural Heritage.

The Imperial Crown Style building dates back to 1925 and the Japanese occupation. The Gyeongseong Municipal Office building was built for the Governor-General of Chosen. Since the time of Korea's liberation from Japan in 1945, the building served as city hall for Seoul. It served this purpose until 2008 when the new city hall was completed. This old building survived plans for its demolition. The old city hall is now dwarfed by the modern city hall to the north.
