[FR] L'église Saint-Pierre est construite, dans le second quart du 12e siècle, près de la grande voie allant de Tours à Bordeaux puis à Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. Le nouvel édifice dépend de la cathédrale de Poitiers et est bâti à la limite des diocèses de Poitiers et de Saintes.

L'église est composée d'une nef centrale flanquée de deux collatéraux, d'un transept à absidioles orientées et d'un chœur terminé par une abside semi-circulaire. Les trois vaisseaux de la nef sont élevés sensiblement à la même hauteur et sont couverts de voûtes en berceau brisé, disposition que l'on retrouve plus souvent en Poitou qu'en Saintonge. L'architecture est particulièrement soignée et elle est mise en valeur par l'utilisation d'une belle pierre de taille calcaire.

La qualité de l'architecture est magnifiée par la sculpture. Soulignant la structure de l'édifice, elle est partout présente, tant à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur. Les corniches, les baies, les portails, les arcades aveugles, les chapiteaux des colonnes sont agrémentés de motifs sculptés de grande qualité. Cette riche ornementation a été réalisée par trois ateliers de sculpteurs qui sont intervenus dans différentes parties de l'église. Quelques œuvres représentatives peuvent être distinguées parmi cet abondant décor.

Le portail du bras sud du transept a été réalisé par l'atelier qui a également travaillé sur le chevet et dans le transept. La voussure du portail compte quatre rouleaux qui sont respectivement ornés d'animaux dans des rinceaux, des Vieillards de l'Apocalypse, de saints et d'un célèbre bestiaire, cortège d'animaux réels ou imaginaires représentés avec verve dans un style animé. Dans le transept, cet atelier a notamment réalisé plusieurs chapiteaux historiés (Adam et Ève, Caïn et Abel, Samson et Dalila, saint Georges terrassant le dragon...).

Les chapiteaux de la nef témoignent du travail d'un deuxième atelier, qui est également intervenu sur les parties hautes du transept. Ces chapiteaux sont agrémentés d'animaux, de végétaux et masques humains. La sculpture couvre toute la corbeille du chapiteau. Les motifs sont souvent disposés symétriquement, dans la recherche d'une composition équilibrée, simplifiée, facilitant la lecture du décor.

Le décor de la façade occidentale a été réalisé par un troisième atelier dont le style se caractérise par l'élégance et le raffinement des figures élancées. Sur la voussure du portail sont illustrés l'Agneau dans une mandorle entourée d'anges, le combat des Vertus et les Vices, les Vierges sages et les Vierges folles et le Zodiaque. Les sculptures, qui suivent les courbes des rouleaux, se détachent nettement de la pierre. Ce portail est encadré par deux arcades aveugles aux tympans sculptés. La crucifixion de saint Pierre est représentée à gauche, et, à droite, le Christ transmettant la Loi à saint Pierre et à saint Paul.

[EN] The Church of St. Peter was built in the second quarter of the 12th century, near the main road from Tours to Bordeaux and Saint-Jacques de Compostela. The new building depends Poitiers Cathedral and is built on the edge of the dioceses of Poitiers and Saintes.

The church is composed of a central nave flanked by two aisles, a transept with apses oriented and a choir with a semi-circular apse. This rich ornamentation was carried out by three workshops of sculptors that have occurred in different parts of the church. Some representative works are distinguishable from the abundant decor.

The south transept portal was created by the studio who also worked on the bedside and in the transept. The arch of the portal has four rollers which are respectively decorated with animals in foliage, Elders of the Apocalypse, saints and famous bestiary procession of real or imaginary animals represented with verve in a lively style. In the transept, this workshop has directed several capitals (Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Samson and Delilah, Saint George slaying the dragon ...).

The capitals of the nave reflect the work of a second workshop, also spoke on the upper parts of the transept. These capitals are decorated with animals, plants and human masks. The sculpture covers the entire basket of the marquee. The patterns are often arranged symmetrically, in the search for a balanced composition, streamlined, easy to read the set.

The decor of the western facade was made by a third workshop whose style is characterized by elegance and refinement of slender figures. On the arch of the portal are shown the Lamb in a mandorla surrounded by angels, the battle of the Virtues and Vices, the Wise Virgins and the Foolish Virgins and the Zodiac. The sculptures, which follow the curves of rollers, are well ahead of the stone. This portal is framed by two blind arches with carved eardrums. The Crucifixion of St. Peter is shown at left, and, right, Christ passing the Act to St. Peter and St. Paul.
