The
Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building was designated as a fallout shelter in Downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The sign is on the northwest side of the building, about ten feet above the sidewalk, and affixed to the right of a glass door marked 12 Fulton Street. The standard fallout marker is far from pristine but in good condition considering its age. The metal placard is mostly free from rust except for minor circles around the upper fasteners and has retained its shape except for a very slight outward bend at the top left corner. The once-black portions are bare and the yellow now a dull ochre. The capacity digits no longer exist.
I located this public use shelter listed on pages 18 and 19 in the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program publication, “Rhode Island Community Shelter Plan: Where to go…What to do…” (undated, but c. 1969-1973); Providence Inset A, Location 82, Amica Building, 65-69 Exchange Street. The 40-page booklet includes a note from Governor Frank Licht, information and instructions, shelter allocation maps by city and town, an explanation of the maps, a family shelter checklist, home supplies, home shelter preparation guidelines, and a final page for general information.
