The Danish painter and illustrator Otto Frello was born in 1924 in the village of Outrup near the town of Varde. He began to create drawings at an early age and later completed an apprenticeship as a painter. Shortly after the Second World War he first became a student at the private art school Akademiet, later becoming a teacher and rector of the school there. In 1967 he left school and illustrated for the private sector. In between, he occupied himself with imaginative painting, which depicts sometimes very bizarre landscapes or situations in great detail. After a first exhibition in 1975, his pictures became internationally known. In 2004 he was awarded the Eurocon prize for "Best Artist". He continued to visit the city of Varde regularly.
In 2014, Otto Frello received honorary citizenship from the city of Varde, a square was named after him and a permanent museum with his works was set up. Otto Frello passed away in 2015.
The city's manhole covers were also designed with the motif of the picture "Udbrud" (Escape) created in 1994, in which you can see a young family (father, mother and two children) tearing down the canvas and leaving the room "behind break out of the picture".
