Oliver Wolcott was born on Nov. 20, 1726, O.S. calendar or Dec. 1, 1726 N.S. calendar, in Windsor, Connecticut. He graduated with top honors from Yale College in 1747 and was commissioned a captain in the New York militia and fought in the French and Indian War.
During the American Revolutionary War he was a delegate from Connecticut to the Continental Congress and a brigadier general and then as major general in the Connecticut militia. He fought in Washington's army at the Battle of New York City. He returned to the Continental Congress in October 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence. He then help General Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold defeat General John Burgoyne's army at the Battle of Saratoga. Link
After the war he served as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut 1786–1796 and 19th Governor of Connecticut from January 5, 1796 until is death on December 1, 1797.
