NL Op de Singel, ter hoogte van nummer 11 hangt een plaquette. Erop staat een Thoratekst van Jesaja: ‘Want mijn huis zal genoemd worden: Huis van gebed voor alle volken’. In het midden een afbeeldingen van de voormalige synagoge. Deze heeft hier gestaan in de periode van 1801 tot 1954.

In het begin van de zeventiende eeuw vestigden de eerste joodse families zich in Nijkerk. Zij kochten land aan in de omgeving en hielden zich bezig met de tabaksteelt. De joodse gemeenschap van Nijkerk was rond 1650 al zo groot dat er een begraafplaats op Hoogstraten gekocht werd. De huidige Nieuwstraat heette in die tijd de 'Jodenbreestraat'.

In 1801 werd er aan de Singel een nieuwe synagoge van de Hoogduitse gemeente plechtig ingewijd. De Hoogduitse gemeente bleef groeien, terwijl tegelijkertijd de Italiaanse gemeente in omvang afnam. In 1808 fuseerden de beide Joodse gemeenschappen. In het begin van de twintigste eeuw liep het aantal gemeenteleden terug. Toch werd de synagoge in 1926 ter gelegenheid van het 125-jarig bestaan nog gerestaureerd.

Aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog woonden er nog enkele tientallen joden in Nijkerk. In de winter van 1940-'41 werd het gebruik van de synagoge gestaakt na een inval door Duitse militairen. Later werd het gebouw zwaar beschadigd door een granaatinslag. De joodse gemeenschap hield zo veel en zo lang mogelijk haar diensten in de school aan de Kloosterstraat. In april 1943 werden alle Nijkerkse joden overgebracht naar het kamp Vught en van daar gedeporteerd naar het oosten. Slechts enkelen hadden tevoren weten onder te duiken en hebben aldus de oorlog overleefd. Van de gedeporteerden keerde vrijwel niemand terug. Na de oorlog is het joodse leven in Nijkerk niet hervat. De resten van de synagoge zijn in 1954 verkocht en later verbouwd tot bedrijfsruimte.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the first Jewish families settled in Nijkerk. They bought land in the area and were involved in tobacco cultivation. The Jewish community of Nijkerk was already so large around 1650 that a cemetery on Hoogstraten was bought. At that time, the current Nieuwstraat was called the 'Jodenbreestraat'.

In 1801 a new synagogue of the High German community was solemnly consecrated on the Singel. The High German congregation continued to grow, while at the same time the Italian congregation decreased in size. In 1808 the two Jewish communities merged. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the number of parishioners declined. Nevertheless, the synagogue was restored in 1926 on the occasion of its 125th anniversary.

On the eve of the Second World War, a few dozen Jews still lived in Nijkerk. In the winter of 1940-'41, the use of the synagogue was discontinued after a raid by German soldiers. Later, the building was heavily damaged by a shell impact. The Jewish community kept its services in the school on Kloosterstraat as much and as long as possible. In April 1943 all Nijkerk Jews were transferred to the Vught camp and deported from there to the east. Only a few had managed to go into hiding beforehand and thus survived the war. Almost none of the deportees returned. After the war, Jewish life in Nijkerk did not resume. The remains of the synagogue were sold in 1954 and later converted into commercial space.
