"The origin of the Pazo dates back to 1865, when Marshal Rubín de Celis ordered the construction of the current building on the ruins of an old Franciscan convent. Since then, the Pazo has served as the home of illustrious figures such as Montero Ríos, Cristino Martos, and Joaquín Sorolla.
It also served as an enclave for military receptions, as a refuge during the Civil War and as a military hospital during World War II.
From 1960 it was abandoned until the end of the 20th century, when its spectacular 80,000m2 estate and its buildings were restored for wedding celebrations."

"Joaquin Sorolla
(Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Spain, 1923) Spanish painter. Trained in his hometown with the sculptor Capuz, he later studied the works of the Prado Museum and, thanks to a scholarship, was able to live and study in Rome from 1884 to 1889. At this time he dedicated himself above all to paintings with historical themes, which They don't offer much interest.

A trip to Paris in 1894 brought him into contact with Impressionist painting, which was a true revolution in his style. He abandoned previous themes and began to paint outdoors, allowing himself to be invaded by the light and color of the Mediterranean. It is precisely the works with light colors and vigorous brushwork that reproduce scenes by the sea that are most identified with Sorolla's art.

However, he was a very active artist, who also made numerous portraits of Spanish personalities and some works of social denunciation ( And they still say that fish is expensive! ) under the influence of his friend Blasco Ibáñez.

His pleasant and easy style made him receive innumerable commissions, which allowed him to enjoy a comfortable social position. His fame went beyond the Spanish borders to spread throughout Europe and the United States, where he exhibited on several occasions. From 1910 to 1920 he painted a series of murals with regional themes for the Hispanic Society of America in New York.

In Sorolla's most characteristic style, that of impressionist technique and conception, the representation of the human figure stands out (naked children, women in flowing dresses) against a beach or landscape background, where reflections, shadows, transparencies, the intensity of light and color transfigure the image and give value to inconsequential themes.

Some critics consider these works a cross between the French Impressionists and the English watercolourists. There is an important collection of his paintings in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid."
