The small town of Newburgh is situated on the south bank of the Firth of Tay in the north-west corner of Fife in Scotland. The war memorial for the town and district can be found at the western end of the town's High Street within a garden area at the apex of the A913 Abernethy Road and Shuttlefield Street.
The memorial was designed by the architect James B Dunn of Edinburgh and sculpted by Alexander Carrick and unveiled on April 21st 1923. It features a Doddingstone stone column with a figure of a highland soldier on top. The soldier is at ease and looking to his left, with a rifle in his right hand with the butt resting on the ground. On all four sides of the column are tablets with the main one facing southwards reading:
'REMEMBER WITH THANKS - GIVING THE TRUE AND FAITHFUL MEN - WHO IN THE YEARS OF WAR - WENT FORTH FROM THIS PARISH FOR GOD AND RIGHTS - THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO RETURNED NOT AGAIN - ARE HERE IN-SCRIBED - TO BE HONOURED FOR EVER-MORE 1914-1919'
On the remaining three tablets are the 76 names with units.
