A primeira linha de amuralhamento da cidade de Guimarães aparece-nos muito tarde na História: apenas na viragem para a segunda metade do século XIII, quando, no castelo, dava-se corpo a uma terceira reforma da estrutura militar. A razão para este atraso não é ainda inteiramente conhecida, mas é provável que, até ao século XIV, constituindo Guimarães duas vilas independentes, se tenha optado por, nos dois primeiros séculos da nacionalidade, guarnecer mais fortemente o burgo alto - o núcleo do castelo - em detrimento da vila baixa, organizada em redor da Colegiada.
Foi, então, no século XIII que se dotou os dois burgos de uma única estrutura defensiva, concentrada no castelo, mas alargada à comunidade e às principais instituições religiosas. A extensão desta empreitada encontra-se bem testemunhada pela grande duração das obras, começadas no reinado de Afonso III (por volta de 1265) e terminadas já no século XIV (em 1318). Por outro lado, o programa então definido obrigou à demolição dos dois conventos mendicantes recentemente construídos na cidade (de São Domingos e de São Francisco), facto que prova, também, o estatuto verdadeiramente importante do amuralhamento do núcleo.

The first line of the defensive wall of the city of Guimarães appears to us too late in history: only at the turn of the second half of the thirteenth century when, in the castle, gave up a third body to reform the military structure. The reason for this delay is not yet fully known, but it is likely that by the fourteenth century, Guimarães was divided in two villages, has been chosen in the first two centuries of nationality, to stronger the garrison of the high town - the heart of the castle.
It was then in the thirteenth century who endowed the two boroughs of only a defensive structure, concentrated in the castle, but extended to the community and major religious institutions. The extension of this endeavor is clearly attested by the large duration of the works, begun in the reign of Alfonso III (circa 1265) and has finished in the fourteenth century (in 1318). On the other hand, then set the program forced the demolition of two newly built mendicant convents in the city (of St. Dominic and St. Francis), a fact which proves also the status of the truly important walled core.
