An information board in the centre of Thirsk has the following historical information.

In 1763 an Act of Parliament was granted to allow Cod Beck to be canalised between Thirsk and the River Swale, which would require five locks to be built.

The only work that was carried out on the scheme was the building of a wharf in Thirsk and the start of construction a canal lock at this point at Sowerby Flatts field. The lock was never completed and the stone used to build this bridge instead.
