In the aftermath of World War II, there was considerable discussion in the U.S. Congress regarding the control and management of nuclear technology. Much of the debate centered on whether the development of nuclear energy would fall under military or civilian control. The resulting legislation, called the Atomic Energy Act, leaned heavily toward civilian control and was broadly supported by the scientific community. U.S. Senator Brien McMahon (D-CT) was chairman of the United States Senate Special Committee on Atomic Energy at that time and the bill was commonly known as the McMahon Act.

Having received quite a bit of notoriety and name recognition with the Atomic Energy Act, Senator McMahon considered a run for President of the United States in 1952. He even had a catchy campaign slogan: ‘The Man is McMahon.’ But his campaign was short-lived as he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer shortly after tossing his hat into the ring. Ten years after the Senator’s death, the U.S. Post Office department honored McMahon on a commemorative postage stamp. Both the stamp and Brien McMahon’s grave marker mention the Atomic Energy Act.
