Tadeusz Kosciuszko came to Philadelphia in 1776 offering his services to the Continental Army in support of the American Revolution. He made significant contributions as a military engineer to the fortifications of Philadelphia and West Point and in the American victory at Saratoga and throughout the southern theater. After his return to Poland, where he participated in Poland’s “War in Defense of the Constitution” and the 1794 Polish Uprising, he returned to the United States and actually lived in Philadelphia for a while.

The statue was sculpted by Polish artist Marian Konieczny in 1977 and installed in 1978 (the stamp was issued in 1979). The base was donated by the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia.
