The Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument was constructed to protect the several hundred flint quarries discovered here. Native Americans of the Ice Age Clovis culture used Alibates flint for spear points to hunt the Columbian mammoth before the Great Lakes were formed, and the Antelope Creek tribes mined this area extensively about five hundred years ago. The quarries are accessible only by guided tour, which leaves the Visitor's Center each morning at 10:00 AM.
