The first Presbyterians arrived on Prince Edward island in 1770. In 1796 the first Established Church of Scotland was opened. In 1825 separate Presbyterian congregation formed in Charlottetown and the first Kirk building was completed in 1831. The cornerstone for the present Gothic Revival style church was laid on June 7, 1877 and the church was dedicated on Oct 20, 1878. Additions for meetings and Sunday school were added in 1895.
The Kirk of St. James is built of stone blocks with brownstone trim and has a cross gable roof with gable ends on both Fitzroy Street ans Pownal Street with in bell tower at the corner of the street directly attached to the gable on Pownal Street and attached to the gable on Fitzroy Street by short wall with a Gothic window..
The tower has an entrance set within a brownstone Gothic arch on the Fitzroy Street side. Above ate a pair of Gothic lancet windows, a belfry with louvered windows, pinnacles on the corners of the tower and a tall octagonal spire with gable topped windows projecting from the base of each side. The tower is topped by a elaborate finial.
The gable end on Pownal Street has a central entrance framed by a brownstone Gothic arch. Above the entrance are three tall Gothic windows the center window being taller that the other two. A two story high section with a slanted roof and a pinnacle at the end projects from gable. The gable end on Fitzroy Street has matching windows and is connected to a one story high section with an auxiliary entrance. A second shorter section further extends this side of the church.
