Wilfrid Kilian (1862-1925)
Licencié de géologie à la Sorbonne, il y soutient à 26 ans une thèse célèbre en 1888 sur « la description de la montagne de Lure ». Il occupe à 30 ans une chaire de professeur à Grenoble et y fonde le laboratoire de géologie de la faculté des Sciences. Il s'intéresse notamment à la géologie alpine et grâce a un long travail d'équipe il résout l'essentiel des problèmes pendant une période de grande évolution des idées et des concepts considérée comme « la première révolution des sciences de la terre ». Il devient membre de l'Académie des sciences en 1919.
Charles Lory (1823-1889)
Agrégé des sciences physiques en 1843, puis professeur de physique à Grenoble, il soutient par la suite une thèse de géologie puis occupe une chaire de professeur de géologie et minéralogie à Grenoble. Il s'attelle alors à l'étude des Alpes, et débrouille un écheveau d'observations géologiques et paléontologiques qui paraissait inextricable U eut le double mérite d'établir une échelle stratigraphique solide et de proposer le premier schema de l'organisation des Alpes. Il devient doyen de la faculté des sciences de Grenoble en 1871 et membre de l'Académie des sciences en 1877.
Pierre Termier (1859-1930)
Major de Polytechnique à 21 ans en 1880, il se passionne pour les sciences de la terre et plus particulièrement pour les Alpes. Il devient titulaire de la Chaire de géologie de l'École des mines de Paris, le 8 août 1894 et exécute de nombreuses missions géologiques dans les Alpes. en Tunisie, en Russie, au Maroc... Spécialiste de la tectonique (branche de la géologie qui traite des déformations de la Terre), il fait la synthèse structurale de la chaîne des Alpes. Il entre en 1909 à l'Académie des sciences dont il deviendra président.

Specialist in tectonics (branch of geology that deals with the deformations of the Earth), he made the structural synthesis of the Alps chain.
