The Sheldon Museum of Art holds an impressive art collection at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 12th and, R St, Lincoln, NE 68588. Also of note are the many sculptures outside in front of and west of the museum. This piece, Pieta was sculpted in 1970 by Bruno Lucchesi in bronze. The sculpture takes its name and theme from the Italian word Pietà which "is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus after his body was removed from the cross. It is most often found in sculpture. The Pietà is a specific form of the Lamentation of Christ in which Jesus is mourned by the Virgin Mary alone."

The sculpture measures 36 x 38 x 59 in. and is cast in bronze atop a concrete base in a field of wood chips outside of the Sheldon Museum. The theme of Mary and Jesus has been modified to be any grieving mother with her male or female child lying across her body. The Smithsonian website does not offer a description of this work to list here.

DIFFERENCES NOTED BETWEEN THE INVENTORY LISTING AND YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND RESEARCH:
Without a description in the Smithsonian inventory listing there is nothing for me to compare it to. It is in great shape for being 50+ years old.
