Rather than relocate an older statue of
Sejong the Great, this twenty ton bronze statue was created to celebrate the opening of Gwanghwamun Plaza in 2009. The statue is well over six metres high. King Sejong, inventor of the Hangul alphabet, is in a sitting position, holding a book.
In addition to creating Hangul,
Sejong of Joseon (15 May 1397 – 8 April 1450) is also credited with inventing the celestial globe, the sundial and the rain gauge. Models of these objects are placed near the statue.
