This stone marker originally stood alongside Selwyn Bridge, built across the creek at the bend in the road.
The bridge was named after John Richardson Selwyn, the second Bishop of Melanesia (1877-1891). Bishop Selwyn was the son of George Augustus Selwyn who, as the first Bishop of New Zealand petitioned NSW Governors for over 15 years to establish a Melanesian Mission on Norfolk Island.
The mission operated on Norfolk Island between 1866 and 1919 and this bridge was within the Mission grounds. The aim of the Mission was to train young Melanesians as teachers and clergy who on return to their communities would act as missionaries.
The bridges was made by local men carrying out community work was payment for minor infringements.
After the road was widened in the 1980's the sign lay hidden on the side of the road for a number of years until it was by Marie Bailey and Arthur Cates.
It was then housed in the Norfolk Island Museum until being re-instated here by the Norfolk Island Historical Society in 2014.
