On August 15, 1967 floodwaters in the Chena River overtopped its banks by over 5 feet, sending floodwaters gushing throughout Fairbanks.
In 2017, the city of Fairbanks and government agency partners installed over two dozen high level markers throughout downtown and around the city marking the water level at each location. The idea is for the visitor to be able to see the exact level at each location.

This particular high level mark (not on the walking tour map) is located at the Fairbanks Community Museum & Dog Mushing Museum in Co-Op Plaza at 535 2nd Ave. The water level at this location is about 2 feet off the ground.
The flood marker reads as follows:

Chena River flood
August 15, 1967
Floodwaters from the Chena River rose to the level shown. If the flood occurred today, water levels would be lower as a result of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project, which includes the Moose Creek Dam and Tanana River Levee.
