One of many high-level markers for the 1967 Chena River flood, this marker is located in front of the Old US Post Office a few blocks from the Chena River.

On August 15, 1967 floodwaters in the Chena River overtopped its banks by over 5 feet, sending floodwaters gushing throughout Fairbanks.
In 2017, the city of Fairbanks and government agency partners installed over two dozen high level markers throughout downtown and around the city marking the water level at each location. The idea is for the visitor to be able to see the exact level at each location.

This particular high level mark (#8 on the walking tour map) is located in downtown Fairbanks a few blocks from the Chena River on the right near the front entrance to the old US Post Office. The water level is about 15 inches off the ground.
The flood marker reads as follows:

August 15, 1967
Floodwaters from the Chena River rose to the level shown. If the flood occurred today, water levels would be lower as a result of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project, which includes the Moose Creek Dam and Tanana River Levee.
