The marsh is the best example of a wet valley alder wood in West Yorkshire. The area contains a number of different habitats such as ponds, waterlogged ground and drier areas.
Because of this unusual mix of wetland habitats it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and parks and countryside staff manage the area to protect it wildlife diversity.
This area is adjacent to a municipal park called Golden Acre Park and the marsh is accessible from car park on the A660 for the Golden Acre Park.
