This was the bottom or lock number 1 on the canal de Jouy. It can be found at the upstream end of the large lake on the river Moselle in Metz that houses the marina for pleasure craft.

The canal was opened in 1877 and provided access for Freycinet barges (40 metres long) off the river Moselle into the wharves in the centre of the city. The wharves are no longer present but the canal can be followed throughout its length and both of the two locks are still present.

The canal closed in 1964 when the canalised Moselle was enhanced to allow 170 metre barges.

This particular lock still has the original lock keepers house alongside.
