As with most, if not all, UK gasometers this one is disused and permanently in the down position.

Telescoping gasometers had a rigid outer frame that never moved but acted as a guide as the gasometer moved up and down.

This wiki article about gas holders contains a picture of this holder and states that it was the first of two built on this site in 1900.
