In 1465 stichtten de dominicanen het Broerenklooster op Het Eiland, een smalle strook land, ten noorden van de oude stadskern van Zwolle. De bij het klooster behorende Broerenkerk doorstond de Beeldenstorm, Hervorming en Franse tijd. In 1982 werd de kerk voor erediensten gesloten. De bouw van het kloostercomplex was niet toevallig, want in de vijftiende eeuw kwam de handelsfunctie van Zwolle tot grote bloei en groeide de stad uit tot een religieus en onderwijskundig centrum. In de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw werd het klooster, of wat daar nog van over was, goeddeels afgebroken. Het sterrenrestaurant De Librije vestigde zich in het pand van de librije, de vroegere bibliotheek van het klooster. Vanaf 1983 is de Broerenkerk gerestaureerd, waarbij spectaculaire gewelfschilderingen op de vele lagen van witkalk tevoorschijn kwamen. Sinds 2013 is de boekhandel Waanders in de Broerenkerk gevestigd.

In 1465 the Dominicans founded the Broerenklooster on Het Eiland, a narrow strip of land north of the old city center of Zwolle. The Broerenkerk belonging to the monastery withstood the Iconoclasm, Reformation and French times. In 1982 the church was closed for worship. The construction of the monastery complex was no accident, because in the fifteenth century Zwolle's trading function flourished and the city grew into a religious and educational center. In the 1970s, the monastery, or what was left of it, was largely demolished. The Michelin-starred restaurant De Librije established itself in the building of the librije, the former library of the monastery. The Broerenkerk has been restored since 1983, revealing spectacular vault paintings on the many layers of whitewash. The Waanders bookshop has been located in the Broerenkerk since 2013.
