Les villageois d'Orgnac, chasseurs et bergers locaux, connaissent l’existence près de leur village d'un gouffre, qu'ils appellent « l'aven du Bertras ». Le 19 août 1935, conduits à l'aven du Bertras par les villageois, cinq spéléologues y descendent : de Joly, Latour, l'abbé Glory, Petit et Chagnard. Ils l'explorent jusqu'au fond des salles Rouges. Cette première expédition dure 10 heures.
