Die Zeche Zollverein in Essen war von 1851 bis 1986 eines der größten Steinkohlebergwerke im Ruhrgebiet. Nach ihrer Schließung wurde das Gelände zu einem Industriedenkmal und Kulturzentrum umgebaut und für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Herzstück ist das Ruhr Museum zur Geschichte der Zeche und der Umgebung.

Ein Teil der Dauerausstellung des Ruhr Museums beschäftigt sich mit der Natur, ihrer Belastung durch den Kohleabbau und der späteren Renaturierung des Zechengeländes. Dazu zählt auch das Ausstellungsstück "Ringbuch der Blutbuche", eine dicke Scheibe einer 127 Jahre alten Rotbuche. Gepflanzt wurde der Baum etwa 1875 im Süden von Essen am Museum Folkwang. 2002 musste er gefällt werden.

An der Baumscheibe sind die Klimageschichte sowie die Umweltbelastung durch die Ruhrindustrie ablesbar: Dünne Jahresringe deuten auf trockene Sommer, aber auch auf eine starke Belastung des Baumes durch Emissionen hin. In Jahren mit dicken Jahresringen ging es dem Baum dagegen gut.

Die angegebenen Koordinaten sind vom Museumseingang. Die Baumscheibe befindet sich in der Abteilung "Gegenwart" auf der Etage "17m". Ein Besuch ist nur mit einem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt ins Museum zu den Öffnungszeiten möglich:

The Zeche Zollverein in Essen was one of the largest hard coal mines in the Ruhr area from 1851 to 1986. After its closure, the site was converted into an industrial monument and cultural center and opened to the public. The centerpiece is the Ruhr Museum on the history of the colliery and the surrounding area.

Part of the Ruhr Museum's permanent exhibition deals with nature, its impact from coal mining and the subsequent renaturation of the colliery site. This also includes the exhibit "Ringbuch der Blutbuche", a thick slice of a 127-year-old copper beech. The tree was planted around 1875 in the south of Essen at the Museum Folkwang. In 2002 it had to be felled.

The history of the climate as well as the environmental pollution caused by the Ruhr industry can be read on the tree disc: Thin annual rings indicate dry summers, but also a heavy burden on the tree from emissions. In years with thick growth rings, however, the tree did well.

The coordinates given are from the museum entrance. The tree disc is located in the "Present" department on the "17m" floor. A visit is only possible with paid admission to the museum during opening hours:
