The present University of Connecticut was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. In 1893, the school became a public land grant college. It became the University of Connecticut in 1939.
A plaque on a rock outcrop is inscribed:

Benjamin Franklin Koons was born in in Sulphur Springs, Ohio on September 8, 1844. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1874 and entered the teaching profession. He received a Master's Degree from Oberlin in 1878 and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1881. That year he was one of three founding faculty at Storrs Agricultural School which is now the University of Connecticut.
