De Vliehors is a vast nature reserve, located on the western half of the island. De Vliehors is a widened beach of approximately 24 square kilometers, due to the size of this sandy plain, the Vliehors is also called the Sahara of the North.
A large part of this sand plain is used as a military training area for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. It is the only place in the Netherlands where air force pilots and NATO partners are allowed to practice with ammunition and explosive charges. The operational name of the Vliehors is Cornfield Range. As a result, the Vliehors is only freely accessible on weekends when the red flag has been lowered.
