The town of Middlesbrough was originally a small rural village that expanded rapidly after the railways arrived.
Iron and steelworks were soon built and a port to cater for exporting manufactured goods around the world.
The population expanded from 40 people in 1829 to 7,600 in 1851. Apart from industrial sites this area was one of the first to be developed and this plaques has information about these houses.

for the Victorian town's well off
residents. Later 1 - 3 became the Head
Office of the Owners of the
Middlesbrough Estate. This
consortium of Quaker businessmen
established moder Middlesbrough.
