In 2013, Canada Post issued a set of eight postage stamps featuring eight Chinatown gates in eight different cities across the country from Montreal to this one in Victoria. The Chinatown in Victoria is the oldest Chinatown in Canada (and the second oldest in all of North America behind San Francisco). The gate itself is not particularly old having been built in 1981 as part of a revitalization of the Chinatown area in Victoria.
Many of these traditional gates, or paifangs in Mandarin, have been given names. This one is named the Gate of Harmonious Interest. There are also lion statues on either side of the gate and time capsules buried beneath each side, one to be opened in 2081 and the other in 2096.
