In 2019 en 2021 zijn er boeken in het Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle op de Blijmarkt 'vrijgelaten'. Het museum is daarom nu ook een bookcrossing zone.

Dit voormalige Paleis van Justitie werd tussen 1838 en 1841 gebouwd in neoclassicistische stijl, naar ontwerp van de Haagse architect Eduard Louis de Coninck. De markante, symmetrische gevels aan de stadszijde (hoofdingang Blijmarkt) en de zuidzijde (Potgietersingel), ieder met een driehoekig fronton gesteund door zes zuilen, zijn vrijwel identiek aan elkaar. Het pand is tot in 1977 in gebruik geweest als rechtbank.

In de jaren 1980 werd het rijksmonument door architect Arne Mastenbroek grondig verbouwd om te dienen als huisvesting van de Afdeling Informatieverwerking van de Rijksplanologische Dienst. Na een tweede verbouwing door Mastenbroek bood het van 1994 tot 2001 onderdak aan het Museum voor Naïeve en Outsiderkunst De Stadshof.

In 2004–2005 werd het verbouwd door architect Gunnar Daan om plaats te bieden aan de Zwolse locatie van Museum de Fundatie, dat sinds 1991 de Sint-Nicolaas- of Bergkerk te Deventer had gebruikt voor tijdelijke exposities. Directeur was toen Agnes Grondman, die in 2006 vertrok. Na een interimperiode trad Ralph Keuning in 2007 aan.

In 2012–2013 werd het museum uitgebreid met "de wolk", een ellipsvormige expositieruimte op het dak van het bestaande gebouw. Deze toevoeging, een ontwerp van Hubert-Jan Henket van Bierman Henket architecten, is aan de buitenkant bekleed met 55.000 driedimensionale witblauw geglazuurde tegels, geproduceerd door Koninklijke Tichelaar uit Makkum. Op 31 mei 2013 werd het museum heropend door prinses Beatrix.

This former Palace of Justice was built between 1838 and 1841 in neoclassical style, after a design by the Hague architect Eduard Louis de Coninck. The striking, symmetrical facades on the city side (main entrance Blijmarkt) and the south side (Potgietersingel), each with a triangular pediment supported by six columns, are almost identical to each other. The building was used as a court until 1977.

In the 1980s, the national monument was thoroughly renovated by architect Arne Mastenbroek to serve as housing for the Information Processing Department of the National Planning Service. After a second renovation by Mastenbroek, it housed the Museum of Naïve and Outsider Art De Stadshof from 1994 to 2001.

In 2004–2005 it was renovated by architect Gunnar Daan to accommodate the Zwolle location of Museum de Fundatie, which had used the Sint-Nicolaas or Bergkerk in Deventer for temporary exhibitions since 1991. At the time, the director was Agnes Grondman, who left in 2006. Ralph Keuning took office in 2007 after an interim period.

In 2012–2013, the museum was expanded with "the cloud", an elliptical exhibition space on the roof of the existing building. This addition, designed by Hubert-Jan Henket of Bierman Henket architects, is covered on the outside with 55,000 three-dimensional white-blue glazed tiles, produced by Koninklijke Tichelaar from Makkum. On May 31, 2013, the museum was reopened by Princess Beatrix.
