The building is known as Commerce House and a plaque on the wall has the following information.

This building was the premises of the York City and
County Banking Company later the Midland Bank.
It was designed by H. Barnes and Coates of
Hartlepool in the Edwardian Baroque style. It was
situated in what was once the commercial
centre of the town.
