The town of Portlethen lies five miles south of the Scottish city of Aberdeen close to the North Sea coast. Once a village, it grew into a commuter town for Aberdeen during the oil boom of the late 20th century.

The parish church is a rectangular building built in 1834 on the site of a Roman Catholic chapel. It sits on an elevated site separated from the town by the East Coast Railway Line. The churchyard lies predominantly south of the church with a sizeable graveyard. An extension of the town cemetery lies south of this.

The stones in the graveyard date from mostly after the church was built. The featured stone reads as follows:

'ERECTED

CROFTER, SOUTH LOIRSTON, NIGG.
