The Saint-Esprit bridge is an arched bridge crossing the Adour river in Bayonne. It connects the city center to the Saint-Esprit district. With a length of 200 meters, the bridge has 7 arches. Enlarged in 1910 to allow the passage of the tramway.

L'histoire du pont Saint-Esprit, qui relie Bayonne au faubourg Saint-Esprit en franchissant l'Adour, est plutôt tumultueuse, tant du fait du caractère impétueux du fleuve, que du caractère stratégique de son emplacement, sur l’une des rares routes reliant la France à l’Espagne.
À l'origine, le pont Saint-Esprit fut construit pour la première fois vers 1150, il était en bois et portait le nom de Pount de la gran mar.
Le pont actuel, qui devait être appelé pont de Nemours, fut commencé en 1846 et achevé en 1849.

The history of the Saint-Esprit bridge, which connects Bayonne to the Saint-Esprit suburb by crossing the Adour river, is rather tumultuous, both because of the impetuous nature of the river, and because of the strategic nature of its location, on one of the few roads connecting France to Spain.
Originally, the Saint-Esprit bridge was built for the first time around 1150, it was made of wood and was called Pount de la gran mar.
The present bridge, which was to be called the Nemours Bridge, was begun in 1846 and completed in 1849.

Il a été aménagé en 3 voies, dont une réservée au bus en sortie de pont. Marc Wittenberg, directeur des services de la ville de Bayonne détaille les nouveautés :
Ce qui change, c'est la largeur des trottoirs. On les a élargi pour faciliter les mobilités douces, c'est-à-dire les piétons, vélos, et même les pêcheurs. On a réduit la largeur de la chaussée, ainsi on diminue la vitesse.
Le Pont St-Esprit de Bayonne a été construit en 1848 et avait bien besoin d'une cure de jouvence, surtout pour accueillir le Tram'bus.
Durant 10 mois, depuis septembre 2017, il était en travaux avec intervention sur le tablier, la chaussée et les trottoirs, et les piles du pont. Une vraie cure de jouvence 150 ans après sa construction. Le but étant également de préparer tous les aménagements nécessaires à l'arrivée du Tram'bus à Bayonne.
Pour les commerçants alentours, c'est aussi un moment attendu car les affaires n'étaient pas au beau fixe depuis 10 mois. Pas de passage, moins de clients comme l'a constaté Jennifer, employée d'un commerce tabac presse de la rive droite : .
On est content que ça rouvre en espérant que ça amène du monde. On a eu un déficit de 60 % de notre chiffre d'affaires comparé aux années d'avant, beaucoup de perte de clients.
Satisfaction pour certains mais déception pour d'autres car le pont sans voiture dans le coeur de la ville, c'était aussi une aubaine pour certains. Une association bayonnaise " Allons à vélo, allons à pied " craint pour la sécurité des piétons et vélos : Elle écrit sur un post facebook :
Les cyclistes, qui ne le demandaient pas, seront donc sur les trottoirs du pont Saint Esprit. Avec eux disparaît la sécurité des piéton.nes et des PMR. Enterrons la dignement ! Le cortège partira du quai de LESSEPS lundi 2 juillet à 18h30. Tenue de circonstance.
La réouverture du Pont est donc à nouveau l'occasion d'évoquer la mobilité dans la ville, l'agglomération alors que la population continue d'augmenter.
