Bonnat-Helleu Museum, the fine arts museum of Bayonne

A French museum with exceptional collections
The Museum of Fine Arts conserves a rich collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, art objects and archaeology. It owes its origin to the generosity of the Bayonne painter Léon Bonnat (1833-1922). Installed in a building inaugurated in 1902, specially designed to house his collections, as well as those of the City of Bayonne, the museum houses works by the greatest European artists: Rubens, Van Dyck, El Greco, Goya, Ingres, Delacroix, Géricault, Degas, Barye, Bonnat, Helleu...

The graphic arts cabinet contains more than 3,500 high-quality drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Poussin, Watteau, and others.

The collection now includes nearly 7,000 works thanks to regular purchases by the City of Bayonne (such as the Cailleux collection of terracotta sculptures from the second half of the 18th century), as well as major gifts and bequests (Bonnat in 1922, Personnaz in 1937, Petithory in 1992, Howard-Johnston in 1989 and 2010).

Restoration and extension, a major project
The museum closed its doors to the public in April 2011. Since then, the team has been working on the collections (inventory, historical research, and restoration campaigns). During the closure, the documentation center remains accessible by appointment.

The extension and restructuring work has begun and will soon give a new face to the museum, which will be renamed "Musée Bonnat-Helleu, Musée des beaux-arts de Bayonne" in 2011.
